A student was seriously injured with a firearm at a school in Offenburg (Ortenaukreis). The victim has since died from his serious injuries in a clinic, the police and public prosecutor’s office said. According to current police findings, the 15-year-old suspect was held by someone who happened to be present until the police arrived. According to the police, he is said to have shot a classmate of the same age in a classroom at least once with a handgun. The alleged perpetrator had more ammunition with him.
The teenager was taken into custody on Thursday for suspected manslaughter, as the police and public prosecutor announced on Thursday evening.
Personal motive suspected
According to the police’s current investigation, the motive for the crime is personal. There is no indication of a political background. “The perpetrator and victim obviously knew each other,” said a police spokesman. The attack is said to have taken place in the German suspect’s 9th grade class.
Baden-Württemberg’s Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) said in a press release: “Our thoughts are with the family of the young person killed and his friends as well as all affected students and their families. My sincere condolences go out to the relatives of the person killed.” Police Chief Jürgen Rieger was also deeply affected by the crime.
Psychological support for students
After several emergency calls, the police were on duty at the school in Offenburg’s northern city on Thursday afternoon with a total of more than 300 officers. The area was largely cordoned off. A helicopter also circled over the school center.
For safety reasons, the approximately 180 students remained in their classrooms until the building was finally searched. They were all cared for by psychologists and experts from the German Red Cross, police and schools. They were then able to join their parents in classes in a neighboring sports hall. According to the police, further follow-up care from experts is guaranteed.
The school, a special education and counseling center with a focus on learning, will be closed on Friday and there will be no classes.
