Today, Thursday, Meta revealed a new feature on the WhatsApp chat platform that allows the user to receive updates and important news from institutions and companies, directly from within the application.
Users in Colombia and Singapore will be the first to receive this service. The company said it would expand over the coming months to make the service available in more countries.
Meta called the service “WhatsApp Channels” and explained that it is a one-way broadcast tool for officials to send texts, photos, videos, stickers and opinion polls.
A person can select the channels they want to follow as they are accessed via invite links sent in chats, email or posted on the internet.
The company said users will be able to follow content about their hobbies, sports teams, updates from local officials and more.
The personal information of the channel owner will not be visible to the followers. Likewise, the phone numbers of followers will not be disclosed.
Global launch partners for this feature will include the World Health Organization, Spanish club Barcelona and English club Manchester City.
