Ajax Amsterdam midfielder Steffen Bergwiss has apologized after hitting a fan following a 3-1 defeat by Twente, ending a frustrating season in the Dutch league on Sunday.
A video circulated on social media showing Bergois apparently attacking a Twente fan in front of an Ajax bus, before an official intervened to remove him.
Bergwis, 31, said – in a statement – that he regretted his actions, and continued, “I should not have done that, after every away match, things are thrown at us and on the bus while signing signatures for fans.”
“I used to, but some people think they can shout and say anything,” he added. My reaction solves nothing, I realize that, it is not wise and I must set an example as an Ajax player.
The Netherlands national team player joined Ajax from Feyenoord at the start of the 2021-2022 season in a deal that sparked controversy in the country due to the fierce rivalry between the two rivals.
Ajax finished the current season in third place in the league, failing to reserve one of the two direct qualification cards for the Champions League for the first time since 2009.
Feyenoord, the league champions who finished the season 13 points ahead of Ajax, qualified for the group stage, while runners-up PSV Eindhoven are in the third round of the major continental championship qualifiers.
Ajax will play the preliminary round in the European League.
