UEFA Awards: Messi and Guardiola lead the race for players and coaches

Today, Thursday, the European Football Association (UEFA) selected Argentine Lionel Messi, Norwegian Erling Haaland, and Belgian Kevin De Bruyne, among a final list of candidates for the European Player of the Year award for the 2022-2023 season.

The players were chosen after a vote by the coaches of the participating clubs last season in the group stage of the three European championships (Champions League, European League, and Conference League), and the coaches of the 55 teams affiliated with the “UEFA” brigade, in addition to a committee of European journalists, and each voter had to choose Three players from a list of ten.

The winner will be revealed on August 31 in Monaco, on the sidelines of the Champions League group stage draw.

Haaland and De Bruyne shone in the exceptional season for Manchester City, the European and England champions, and the domestic cup and European Super Cup holders.

As for Messi (36 years), who moved this summer from French Paris Saint-Germain to American Inter Miami, he led Argentina to its third title in the 2022 Qatar World Cup, at the expense of France with a penalty shootout, to complete – the best player in the world seven times – his record with the only title. which was lacking.

Among the coaches, Spaniard Pep Guardiola, City coach, Italian Simone Inzaghi, Inter coach and European runner-up, and compatriot Luciano Spalletti, who led Napoli to the league title after waiting three decades, were selected.
