Our U19 had another duel on Saturday in the Olympic Park against RasenBallsport Leipzig with a competitor from the top third of the table in the A-Junior Bundesliga North/Northeast. While our Herthaners were in second place in the table before the 11th matchday of the current season, the Saxons were only two positions behind. After the first defeat of the season last week at VfL Wolfsburg, head coach Oliver Reiß’s boys responded appropriately with a 2-1 (2-1) home win. After just under a quarter of an hour, Leander Popp rewarded our blue-whites’ effort with the lead (16th). The guests equalized shortly afterwards through Yannick Eduardo (22′) – but our Spree Athenians didn’t let that derail them. On the contrary: Captain Lukas Michelbrink restored the old distance before the break (35th). In the second section, our Berliners skillfully defended their lead and even missed further goals. “One was a game with high intensity. We started well, which is why we deserved the lead. Due to the good opposition, the possession phases alternated regularly, but we had a little more access in the pressing. The chances after the break could have ensured a clearer result. We are proud of this top performance, above all of our character,” summed up our trainer. At least until Sunday, Reiß’s protégés will take the top spot in the overall ranking again, before the Wolves can overtake 1. FC Union with a three-pointer.
The meeting between our U17s and FC Energie Cottbus in the B-Junior Bundesliga North/Northeast, which was originally planned for Saturday, was canceled at short notice due to too many cases of illness.
