Manchester United decides to leave Greenwood, despite his acquittal of rape allegations

Manchester United said today, Monday, that striker Mason Greenwood will leave Old Trafford, after an investigation into allegations of attempted rape, of which he was acquitted.

Greenwood, who was suspended by United in January 2022 after claims were circulated against him on social media, was accused of attempted rape and assault last October.

He was scheduled to appear in court on November 27, 2023, but all criminal charges against him were dropped in February.

“All concerned, including Mason, have realized the difficulties he faces in resuming his career with Manchester United,” the club said in a statement. So it was mutually agreed that it would be more appropriate for him to do that away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to get to that outcome.”

In a statement to British media, Greenwood said he had “made mistakes”, adding: “I did not do the things I was accused of. Today’s decision was part of a participatory process between myself, Manchester United and my family.

“The best decision for all of us is to continue my football career away from Old Trafford, so that my presence will not be a distraction to the club,” the English player continued.
