How to use air conditioning properly to take care of your health | Cuyo’s diary

The use of air conditioning responds to a need and not so much to comfort. This idea has already been rejected, especially in recent years. Therefore, given the increase in temperature these days and facing summer, for many people it is necessary to turn on these devices.

However, we must first think about cleaning it, which is very necessary for its correct functioning and, by decanting, to avoid negative effects on health.

In this sense, the cleaning of air conditioning units is important, not only for their proper functioning but also, and above all, for their maintenance, which can directly affect the human organism.

Therefore, it is suggested that these devices be reviewed and supervised periodically by specialized and licensed personnel. If maintenance is not adequate, the accumulation of germs, viruses, bacteria, molds, dust and pollens can proliferate. These substances are deposited throughout the year in the different pipes, gutters and ducts, blocking them or releasing stale air, that is, contaminated and harmful.

Let’s understand that the air conditioning equipment takes the air in the environment and distributes it with changes in temperature. In other words: it does not renew the air, it only cools it. Hence the importance of cleaning it.

Under these precepts, its inappropriate use creates an environment with thermal discomfort, which unbalances the thermohygrometric conditions (temperature and humidity) of our body, altering health.

Let us remember that the normal temperature of our body is 36.5 °C. Therefore, using the air conditioning at lower levels can affect our body.

As its name suggests, air conditioning must condition the environment, and the ideal temperature is between 22°C and 24°C. In turn, the recommended humidity ranges between 35% and 60%. Another important fact: each degree lowered in the temperature of this device implies between 5% and 8% more electricity consumption.

Let us remember that the misuse of air conditioning units produces a negative effect on the health of vulnerable or sensitive people, especially those who suffer, for example, from allergies, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or Legionella pneumonia. The name of this bacteria derives from the group of veterans “American Legion” since this bacteria was discovered, precisely, in the circuit of air conditioning units in a hotel during a convention of former soldiers.

The health risks of cold air

First of all, we must banish the idea that air conditioners cause allergies, since that direct possibility does not exist.

Yes, we can affirm that sudden changes in temperature can have an impact on the body, especially in allergic patients. Room temperatures below what is recommended and lack of cleaning of the appliances can cause health problems. So, it is recommended to set the device to ventilation mode every 2 or 3 hours during the night.

There are places such as shopping centers, banks, hotels, means of transportation, offices and movie theaters where, upon entering, the change in temperature is suddenly perceived. This happens because they are central cooling. By spending several hours in these places, typical symptoms of cold may appear.

Vehicle air conditioning should also be cleaned, preferably by authorized personnel. It is suggested to turn it on after lowering the windows, put it in ventilation mode and then switch it to cold air. In this case, the effect on health is identical to that described above for devices for home and commercial use.
