Ghobash: The UAE is keen to enhance cooperation with Russia

His Excellency Saqr Ghobash, Speaker of the Federal National Council, held talks with Valentina Matviyenko, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, yesterday, at the outset of the official visit of His Excellency and his accompanying delegation from the Federal National Council to the Russian capital, Moscow, with the aim of discussing ways to strengthen cooperation relations. During the meeting, they discussed the relations of cooperation and strategic partnership between the UAE and the Russian Federation, and the efforts of the two friendly countries to enhance prospects for joint cooperation in all fields. The two sides also reviewed a number of issues of common interest and exchanged views on them.

At the beginning of the meeting, Saqr Ghobash expressed his thanks to Matviyenko and to the Russian government and people for the warm welcome, stressing the desire of the UAE and the keenness of its wise leadership to enhance cooperation with the Russian Federation in various fields, especially parliamentary ones. His Excellency said: “Parliamentary relations play a major role in bringing together common views on many national, regional and international files, and the parliamentary relationship has developed significantly in recent years in light of the common desire to activate cooperation and coordination in various fields with the aim of achieving common interests.”

He continued, “The establishment of the Emirati-Russian Parliamentary Friendship Committee and the signing of the Agreement of Understanding and Cooperation between the Federal National Council and the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation are among the most prominent stages in the development of parliamentary relations, in addition to visits and meetings at international parliamentary conferences.” He pointed out the importance of this visit in strengthening parliamentary cooperation and exchanging experiences. In the interest of the two friendly countries and peoples.

His Excellency Ghobash touched on the issue of combating climate change, where he said: “We in the UAE are keen to be an example of efforts to reduce climate change in the region and the world. The UAE is the first Gulf country to sign the Paris Agreement, and the first country in the region to announce a strategy to achieve neutrality.” climate by 2050.

He pointed out that the UAE, despite being an oil-producing country, is one of the least countries in carbon emissions related to oil extraction, as its oil companies rely entirely on nuclear and solar energy for their operations. His Excellency added, “The United Arab Emirates will host the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) from November 30 to December 12 at Expo City in Dubai, to conduct an assessment of the progress made in combating climate change.”

In turn, Matviyenko emphasized the strength of the bilateral and parliamentary relations between the UAE and the Russian Federation and the development they are witnessing, as the UAE is considered one of the most important economic partners in the Arab world for Russia, and they seek to consolidate this partnership in a way that serves the common interests of the two countries.

The President of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation welcomed HE Ghobash and the delegation of the Federal National Council, and stressed the importance of this visit in enhancing various aspects of cooperation between the two countries in various fields, especially parliamentary ones.
