Dutch football club Ajax Amsterdam confirmed today, Friday, that its former international goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar, was taken to hospital while on vacation in Croatia due to a cerebral hemorrhage, but his condition is stable.
Van der Sar, 52, who spent 6 years at Manchester United before leaving in 2011, was recently a manager at Ajax, but left his post before the end of last season after the team finished third in the league, missing out on the Champions League for the first time since 2009.
Ajax said in a brief statement, “Edwin van der Sar suffers from a cerebral hemorrhage. He is now in the hospital’s intensive care unit and his condition is stable.”
His wife, Anne-Marie, suffered a brain hemorrhage in 2009 while he was a player at Old Trafford, but made a full recovery.
